| Customer Reviews: I am happy with it, but it isn't perfect July 17, 2010 Eric N Fulmer 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been using this rack for a few months now and I am overwhelmingly happy with it. We use it for transporting the bike and the scooter to trails. We have 2 snow dogs that we attach to the scooter like a sled and they pull like the dickens. I ride the bike and pull the baby while my wife rides the scooter. I wanted this one so we could get the dogs into the back of my truck even if the bike and scooter were still attached. This has worked great! The fold down function is just what I needed and it feels strong enough to last. The shock assist doesn't seem to make much difference to me, but I am glad it's there when my wife lifts or lowers the bikes. It is really attractive attached to my truck and I have been approached by strangers to ask about how it works several times.
The mechanism for lifting and lowering it is simple to understand and use, but feels strong and secure. Assembly was not a problem, although a long-body socket for the bolts holding the top plate to the vertical bars was helpful.
-1 star because the attachment mechanism for the hitch broke on mine the first time I used it. Instead of a standard hitch pin, this takes a special bolt with a locking mechanism that also provides an anti-vibration feature. That bolt goes into a fat nut in the slider that is held in place with a plastic piece. That plastic broke when I was trying to remove it after the first use. Getting the thing off the truck was a major headache (mostly because of my truck and hitch combination). When I got it off I had the slider drilled through for a standard pin. The manufacturer was very responsive, understanding, and helpful, but didn't send me any replacement parts. I would not have used them anyway because the plastic piece just doesn't seem strong enough for this application. If I had written this review when this all happened, I would have given the rack only 2 stars, but after a few months using it every week I am really happy its performance (including several times attaching/detaching from the truck for various reasons). I have -almost- forgotten the problems of the first use.
Dura Assist Bile Rack review May 12, 2010 Jon (Kansas) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I just received this rack, unpacked it and assembled. The assembly was easy requiring only 4 bolts. I mounted the rack on the car's 2 inch receiver hitch using 1 additional bolt supplied with the rack. This bolt takes all of the slop out from between the rack and the car. The assembly is rock solid on the car and does not vibrate around like many other racks. The rack and car act as one unit and this keeps the motion of the rack and bikes to a minimum. The rack tips back and my van's back door opens with lots of extra space. I mounted 3 bikes and all fit well from a 48cm to a 61cm. The assist part works well and the weight of 3 carbon road bikes holds it in the down position and it is easy to lift up. There is a feature to disable the assist when no bikes are on the rack. This allows the bike rack to be in the down position with no weight on the rack. All in all this is a well engineered rack that is well built and very strong. I will be adding some lube at the main hinge points as it is a bit stiff right out of the box but I am sure it will remain solid for years to come.
